Tatsuoki Nambata (1905–1997) was recognized as a pioneering figure in postwar Japanese abstract art. Born in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, he attended Waseda Senior High School and later entered Waseda University, which he eventually left before graduation to pursue painting independently. His postwar career developed from geometric abstraction into a unique artistic language that explored inner spiritual worlds and the “resonance of life” through the use of lines and colors. He played a pivotal role in shaping the course of Japanese art history in the postwar period.
“Collage of Iron Pieces” incorporates rusted iron fragments, oil paint, and washers arranged onto the surface, generating a profound tension between the materiality of the elements and the pictorial space.
