書:益田鈍翁 Donno Masuda(1848-1938)

本名、益田孝。草創期の日本経済を動かし三井財閥を支えた。明治維新後、世界初の三井物産の設立に関わり、日本経済新聞の前身である中外物価新報を創刊した。茶人としても高名で鈍翁と号し、「千利休以来の大茶人」と称された。(Wikipediaより)

Takashi Masuda, was a pivotal figure in the founding era of Japan’s economy and supported the Mitsui Zaibatsu. After the Meiji Restoration, he was involved in the establishment of Mitsui & Co.,ltd the world’s first general trading company, and founded Chugai Bukka Shimpo, the predecessor to the Nikei Inc. He was also renowned as a tea master, known by the name Dono, and was called ‘a great tea master since Sen no Rikyu’. 

箱書:横井夜雨 Yau Yokoi(1883-1945)

名古屋生まれ、本名は横井半三郎。実業家で茶人、号は「夜雨」。ロシアのモスクワで務めた後、東京へ戻り、三井財閥の創始者、益田孝(鈍翁)を私淑し、茶の湯を能くする。茶会記の研究及び古陶の研究家をした。1945年(昭和20年)死去。小田原に、小田原における旧横井夜雨別邸・茶室 「廂庵」がある。(Wikipediaより)

Born in Nagoya, his real name was Hansaburo Yokoi. He was a businessman and a tea master, known by the name ‘Yau’. After working in Moscow, Russia, he returned to Tokyo and privately admired Takashi Masuda (Dono), the founder of the Mitsui Zaibatsu, and excelled in the way of tea. He conducted research on tea ceremony records and was a researcher of ancient pottery. He died in 1945 (Showa 20). In Odawara, there is the former Yokoi Yau Villa and tea room ‘Shoan’.
